Description:
Visitors, like these children, enjoyed a free-standing, interactive demonstration of the Hydrodynamic Lubrication Bearing Rig. This rig allowed visitors to observe how a bearing works regardless of whether it uses water, oil or air, similar to the foil air bearings researched by NASA Glenn's Oil-Free Turbomachinery Team. Turning the handle of the rig, as seen in this photograph, rotates a stainless steel shaft, which drags blue colored water into the plastic bearing sleeve and forms a lubricating film. The faster the handle is turned, the more water is pumped, the higher the lubrication film pressure and the more load the bearing can support. The water-lubricating layer prevents rubbing contact and wear, and thus, reduces friction dramatically. Image Credit: NASA/Imaging Technology Center › Return to Image Feature
