Description:
Tia Ferguson is a NASA engineer who spent four weeks in Antarctica on a science mission. Ferguson was part of a team of scientists and engineers who traveled to Earth's southernmost continent to recover a science experiment that was attached to a high-altitude balloon. The experiment, known as the Advanced Thin Ionization Calorimeter, or ATIC, studied cosmic rays. In addition to helping recover the experiment, Ferguson experienced what it is like to live in an extremely cold environment. She learned how to camp in the snow during survival training, saw penguins and whales in the wild, and traveled to the South Pole. This photo gallery documents Ferguson's trip and describes the experience in her own words.
