Detail View: NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day Collection: The Elephant's Trunk in IC 1396

Title:
The Elephant's Trunk in IC 1396
Explanation:
Like a picture from a galactic Just So Story [ http://www2.shore.net/~mogget/justso.htm ], the Elephant's Trunk Nebula [ http://www.angelfire.com/id/jsredshift/ july.htm#elephant ] winds through the emission nebula and young star cluster complex IC 1396 [ http://www.allthesky.com/nebulae/ic1396-e.html ], in the high and far off constellation of Cepheus [ http://www.astropix.com/HTML/E_SUM_N/CEPHEUSO.HTM ]. Bright swept-back ridges compose the suggestive form, outlining pockets of interstellar dust and gas. Such embedded dark, comet-shaped clouds [ http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap981206.html ] contain the raw material for star formation [ http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap000924.html ]. About 3,000 light-years distant [ http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/cosmic/ cosmic.html ], the relatively faint IC 1396 complex [ http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-bib_query? bibcode=1996A%26A...309..581W&db_key=AST&high=3af6c03e8102807 ] covers a much larger region on the sky than shown here, with an apparent width of more than 10 full moons. This close-up telescopic view [ http://robgendler.astrodigitals.com/1396.html ] is a delightful color mosaic [ http://robgendler.astrodigitals.com/ ] of two digital images intended to follow the 'satiable [ http://www2.shore.net/~mogget/elefant.htm ] curious cosmic trunk.
