Detail View: NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day Collection: IC 1396 in Cepheus

Title:
IC 1396 in Cepheus
Explanation:
Stunning emission [ http://astro.nineplanets.org/twn/types.html#emission ] nebula IC 1396 mixes [ http://starmatt.com/gallery/astro/ic1396.html ] glowing cosmic gas and dark dust clouds in the high and far off constellation of Cepheus [ http://www.astropix.com/HTML/E_SUM_N/CEPHEUSO.HTM ]. Energized by the bright, bluish central star seen here, this star forming region [ http://www.star.ucl.ac.uk/~nwright/imaging.html ] sprawls across hundreds of light-years -- spanning over three degrees on the sky while nearly 3,000 light-years from planet Earth. Among the intriguing dark shapes [ http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap050521.html ] within IC 1396, the winding Elephant's Trunk [ http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap031019.html ] nebula lies just below center. The gorgeous color view is a composition of digitized [ http://www-gsss.stsci.edu/Dss/dss_home.HTM ] black and white photographic plates recorded through red and blue astronomical filters. The plates were taken using the Samuel Oschin Telescope [ http://www.astro.caltech.edu/palomarnew/sot.html ], a wide-field survey instrument at Palomar Observatory [ http://www.astro.caltech.edu/palomarnew/ ], between 1989 and 1993.
