Detail View: NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day Collection: Distant Galaxies

Title:
Distant Galaxies
Explanation:
This Hubble Space Telescope [ http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap970306.html ] image of a group of faint galaxies "far, far away" [ ftp://crux.astr.ua.edu/web/goodies/data_resources/galaxies.text ] is a snap shot [ http://www.stsci.edu/pubinfo/gif/fbgalax.txt ] of the Universe when it was young. The bluish, irregularly shaped galaxies revealed in the image [ http://www.stsci.edu/pubinfo/PR/95/08.html ] are up to eight billion light years away and seem to have commonly undergone galaxy collisions and bursts of star formation [ http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap970224.html ]. Studying these objects is difficult because they are so faint, however they may provide clues to [ http://oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/background-text/galcens.txt ] how our own Milky Way Galaxy [ http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap970517.html ] formed.
