Title:
Eruption of Soufriere Hills Volcano
Description:
The Soufriere Hills Volcano on the island of Montserrat remained active on June 4, 2006. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying onboard NASA's Aqua satellite took this picture the same day. This image shows a volcanic plume moving westward away from Montserrat, gradually dissipating over the Caribbean Sea. The plume is slightly darker and duller than the nearby clouds. The volcano's activity in early June was milder than some of its activity in May, which included a dome collapse. NASA image created by Jesse Allen, Earth Observatory, using data provided courtesy of the MODIS Rapid Response team.
